Anna Johnson-Winegar, Ph.D. President
Dr. Anna Johnson-Winegar, who ia a native of Frederick, joined the Fort Detrick Alliance in 2007 and currently serves as the President of the Alliance.
Since her retirement from government service at the Senior Executive Level in 2003, Dr. Johnson-Winegar has provided independent consulting services to clients in industry, academia, and the government. Her areas of expertise are homeland security, bio-terrorism, general chemical-biological defense, and lab management. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Naval Research Advisory Committee, an adjunct member of the Defense Science Board, and serves on the board of the several non-profit organizations. Dr. Johnson-Winegar’s final government position was based at the Pentagon where she was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Chemical-Biological Programs. Her previous position was head of the Human Systems Department at the Office of Naval Research. Prior to that she was the Director of Environmental and Life Sciences in the Office of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering. Earlier in her career Dr. Johnson-Winegar spent more than 20 years at Fort Detrick, serving in a variety of technical and management positions that included assignments at USAMRIID, USAMMDA, and USAMRMC. Her final responsibility at Fort Detrick was Director of Medical Chemical and Biological Defense Research Programs at USAMRMC. Dr. Johnson-Winegar received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Hood College. She earned Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Microbiology from the Catholic University of America. In 2006, Hood College bestowed the Distinguished Alumna Award on Dr. Johnson-Winegar. In addition to being honored by her alma mater, Dr. Johnson-Winegar has received a Gold Medal from the National Defense Industrial Association, the Meritorious Executive Award from the Department of Defense, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Science and Engineering honoring her long-held interest in mentoring women in science careers. Dr. Johnson-Winegar is the author of numerous technical manuscripts, and she has authored or co-authored several book chapters. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, Sigma Xi, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Defense Industrial Association, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
