George E. Lewis, Jr., DVM, Ph.D., COL (USA-RET) Board Member
Dr. Lewis joined the Fort Detrick Alliance in 2003 and became its President in 2008. During that time he has been diligent in building a strong relationship between Fort Detrick and the Frederick Community by fostering open communication and a free exchange of ideas between the Board and Fort Detrick’s Garrison Commander.
Dr. Lewis currently is a Consultant in Advance Medical Technologies for General Dynamics Information Technologies. He also is a Veterinarian licensed to practice in Maryland, Florida, and Washington, DC. In 1996, Dr. Lewis retired from the US Army after a 30-year career. At the time of his retirement he commanded the US Army Medical Materiel Development Activity, US Army Medical Research and Development Command, at Fort Detrick. During his Army career, Dr. Lewis was involved primarily with the Army’s infectious disease and medical biodefense research, development, and acquisition activities. His responsibilities took him from working at a laboratory bench to working at the Pentagon, where in 1989 was the Executive Assistant to the Assistant Surgeon General for Medical Research and Development and also served as the Army Surgeon General’s Liaison to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development, and Acquisition. Dr. Lewis served as the senior medical Biological Warfare Defense Expert at the Pentagon during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He spent 10 years facilitating high level reviews of congressional special-interest funded advanced medical technology research and development programs. The University of Florida awarded Dr. Lewis a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science in 1966. Dr. Lewis then attended Auburn University where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1970. He was selected to participate in a long-term graduate program at the University of Illinois, from which he received a Ph.D. in microbiology in 1977. Dr. Lewis is a Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. Dr. Lewis is the author of more than 50 scientific publications. Among his many military and civilian honors are the Department of the Army Research and Development Achievement Award, the National Defense Service Medal with Star, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States James A. McCallam award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of Medicine and Health, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) National Medal of Honor. A Frederick resident for the past 32 years, Dr. Lewis is active in many local, national, and international organizations including Hood College (where he is a Trustee), the Rotary Club of Frederick (Past President, 2002-2003), the Frederick Innovative Technology Center, the C&O Canal National Historical Park Federal Advisory Commission, the District of Columbia Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, and the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine. The Fort Detrick Alliance will continue to be the primary liaison between Fort Detrick and all sectors of the Frederick Community as both Fort Detrick and Frederick grow and face the challenges that growth and success bring."
